A New Chapter Begins in the South Bay AreaOn a balmy October evening in Palo Alto, over 30 South Bay Area progressive activists came together to launch the new Bend the Arc: South Bay Chapter. From Stanford students to grandparents and everyone in-between, it was a room filled with passion to work together, as Jews, for justice and equality.

“You cannot be silent in the face of injustice!” Exclaimed one of the participants, in explaining why he was so excited to be part of the formation of the new group. From the opening go-around of attendees, the urgency and appetite for collective action was palpable and energizing.

Sheldon Lewis, Rabbi Emeritus at Congregation Kol Emeth, opened the evening by welcoming the group into his Silicon Valley home, where he has lived for over 40 years. Melanie Aron, Rabbi at Congregation Shir Hadash, set the intention for the night by sharing a teaching from the Torah.

Later in the evening, Stosh Cotler, Bend the Arc CEO, shared the vision of Bend the Arc and how chapters are a focal point in Bend the Arc’s strategy of building a people-powered national Jewish social justice voice in the U.S. Simone Hudson, a Stanford undergrad student, followed up the CEO’s inspiring call to action by facilitating small group discussions answering the question, “What is one issue in our society that keeps you up at night and you would like to change?”

Rachel Feldman, Bend the Arc National Field and Campaigns Director, capped off the full agenda by presenting a “Shofar Phone” (an invention of Bend the Arc’s new online initiative, vsGoliath) to the newly-formed Chapter. She shared how the tangible symbol represents the new Chapter’s connection to progressive Jews around the country and to the moral call to hold our public officials accountable.

The leaders of the Bend the Arc: South Bay Chapter are wasting no time in getting started. Members of the chapter will be gathering for a Yes on CA Prop 47 phone bank on Election Eve in the South Bay Area.
